DIY: New Entryway Decor for $30!!

I know, I know, I haven't blogged in quite a while.  Life has been keeping me busy!  I thought I'd share with you my newly decorated entryway that I mostly DIY-ed for less than forty bucks!!  I love to decorate, especially when I can do things myself.  I always feel so proud being able to show my house to others when the things around it have a story or are handmade.

If you want to recreate this look, start by shopping your home.  Look for odds and ends you might have stashed away in the closet or basement.  Use an open mind when searching for things and try to picture what they could look like!  Yard/garage sales and thrift stores are always my next stop; you  can find some great junk at these places!  Lastly, local craft stores with a 40/50% off coupon are a great way to save when buying needed supplies for DIY projects.

We moved into our home 6 months ago, and finally this week I have decorations up in our entryway!  Here is what my new entryway looks like now that I've DIY-ed it!

Now let me tell you how I went from an empty space, to that!

Frames:  I bought two frames from TJMaxx at $5.99 a piece.  Instead of sticking pictures inside, I cut out 5x7 pieces of coordinating scrapbook paper and placed them inside the frames.  I already had the paper, so this DIY only cost me $12.  If you have frames laying around use them and it will cost you nothing!

Wreath: I LOVE these coffee filter wreaths I have been seeing around Pinterest for the Holiday season.  I bought a wooden wreath form from Michaels for $2-3, but with my 50% coupon only paid half of that.  I had coffee filters already but needed a couple more.  I paid $2 for more filters and stained them with coffee ( I was out of tea bags.) I pinched each filter into a cone shape and hot glued the tip onto the wreath form.  A few hours later.... and all I paid was $3.

Wooden Sign:  Almost a freebie!  I grabbed a piece of wood from an old pallet (we have tons of these for projects/etc.)  I painted it a few different shades and of acrylic paint I already had.  I found the words I wanted on the sign, typed them how I wanted them to look, and printed it out.  I laid the paper on top of my sign according to how I wanted the wording to lay and traced over each letter with a pen, pressing hard enough to make an indention on the wood.  Once I was done I used an itty bitty spotter brush from A.C. Moore that cost me $2 and carefully painted each letter.  After a light sanding it was done!

Framed Leaf Prints: I got some old matching frames from my parent's house that my mom wasn't using anymore.  The frames were oak-like in color so I wanted to paint them.  I dry-brushed a dark brown acrylic paint over each frame, only applying one coat.  The oak still shows through, but the paint helps it have a more dimensional color.  The leaf prints started out as a single poster from A.C. Moore.  The original print cost $12.  With a 50% off coupon I only paid around $6.  I traced out an 8x10 box around each picture and cut them out so they would fit into my frames.  This is so much cheaper than buying 3 separate prints at $20+ a piece!  In all for this DIY I paid for the price of the single print.  I already had the frames and the acrylic paint!

Lamp & Mason Jars: My mom got a set of these lamps at a yard sale years ago.  They were in my bedroom at my parent's house and traveled to our bedroom once we got married.  They don't give off much light so I decided one of them would look great on the cabinet.  The mason jars were just extras I had laying around the house.  I used a ton of them at our wedding and think they are so cute for decorating and storing things.  I paid nothing for either of these, bonus!  Try thrift stores to find old mason jars.  You can find all sorts of colors, shapes, and sizes!

Cabinet:  This wooden cabinet is another find from my parent's basement.  I love going through the things in their basement, it is one of my favorite places to find old things to repurpose!  This cabinet was from my mom's house growing up.  It started out as an orangeish oak color--definitely not my fave, so I decided a few quick coats of brown spray paint would do the trick.  I got a $6 bottle of spray paint at Michaels, and with my 50% off coupon I paid around $3!  After a few quick coats it looked as good as new and totally different; perfect!  This DIY cost me the price of the spray paint.

In all I spent around $30 to put together my new entryway.  I'd say it turned out pretty good!

What are some of the DIY's around your home?

Jace's First Trip to the Park!

Anthony and I both love the outdoors.  I'm not so much for the bugs and snakes, but I love to be outside whether it be at the beach, mountains, or anywhere in between.  Our favorite outdoor activities to do together are fishing and hiking.  In fact, Anthony proposed to me on one of our hiking trips last year.

As much as we love to be outside, it is only fitting for Jace to be the same way!  Whenever he is in a fussy mood all you have to do is take him outside and he immediately calms down!  For the past few weeks we have been taking him on nightly walks after dinner.  He loves the fresh air and it helps tire him out before bedtime, (not to mention get a little exercise in for mommy and daddy!)

We live about five minutes from one of the big parks in our town; it has a mile long walking trail.  Since the weather was so nice tonight we decided we'd go walking at the park.  Jace loved it!  He sat in the stroller the whole time, occasionally laughing and cooing.  Needless to say, he is sound asleep now!

What are some of your favorite outdoor activities?? How about your kids??

Friday Faves!

I am starting a series on here called "Friday Faves" where I share some of mine/Jace's favorite things of the week!  Since I just decided today to start the series I'm gonna start it off with faves from today!

1. Yes, I did just post a weight loss update and admitted to indulging in too many sweets.  And yes, I did get a chocolate milkshake from BK earlier today.  What can I say, I love sweet treats!  Yummy!

2. Jace has found his hands and is learning to grab things!  His favorite thing for the past week or so has been  his Fisher-Price rocker.  The turtle plays music and the owl and snail are rattles.  The seat also vibrates--ooh la la!  He just sits in it and giggles at the little toys!

3. Totally random, but I made tacos for lunch today and these snack bowls from Target are perfect for holding all of the toppings!  I use them for apples and peanut butter as well as veggies and dip on other days!

4. I LOVE Trifari jewlery.  It looks way more expensive than it actually is and it is all super cute.  These are my favorite studs that I lost a few months ago.  I found them today and was so excited!

What are some of your favs this week??

Food: What's For Dinner #2

Anthony, Jace, and I went over to my parent's house tonight for dinner.  My mom doesn't like cooking, so whenever we go over there I'm the one making dinner unless my dad grills something.  I don't really mind it since there are always plenty of people to help watch Jace.

I decided to try out a new recipe I had on the menu for this week.  I found it on Pinterest of course and it looked so yummy!  The original post where I got the recipe from can be found here

Pinned Image

Ingredients
    • 4-6 boneless skinless chicken breasts
    • 4 garlic cloves, minced (I didn't have garlic cloves so I just subbed 1tbs minced garlic)
    • 4 tablespoons brown sugar
    • 3 teaspoons olive oil
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 500°F and lightly grease a casserole dish.
  2. In small sauté pan, sauté garlic with the oil until tender.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in brown sugar.
  4. Place chicken breasts in a prepared baking dish and cover with the garlic and brown sugar mixture.
  5. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Bake uncovered for 15-30 minutes.

This was an easy peasy recipe to make, not to mention the family loved it!  I served it with a house salad, garlic breadsticks, mac n' cheese, and green beans.

What are some of your favorite chicken recipes?

Food: Weekly Meal Menu Planning

Anthony and I just recently reworked out budget.  We are usually pretty good about sticking to what we budget for certain things, except for when it comes to eating!  I always seem to go over the grocery budget when I go to the store (part of the problem was craving certain junk when I was pregnant), and we somehow manage to eat out more than we allot for as well.

With the new budget, my biggest goal is to lower our grocery bill.  I have been pretty successful thanks to a few things.  1. We have changed the way we eat, so all of the junk that I used to buy doesn't even make it into the cart.  2. I finally started couponing again since we have gotten settled into a routine with Jace.  3. I have been meal planning and actually sticking to the plan. 4. We have no choice. :)

When we first got married I would plan our meals for the week and just roughly jot down what I needed from the store and when I thought we might eat it.  However, throughout the week life happened and we found ourselves not wanting what was planned or just eating out because it was more convenient.  Since Jace has been here I've learned that planning meals to eat at home is more convenient than trying to get everyone together to go out to eat (not to mention alot cheaper!)

I always buy 4 newspapers on Sunday with the coupon ad inserts.  Now I'm no crazy coupon lady but I do try to save a few dollars here and there.  Once I have my coupons clipped and sorted in my binder I sit down and try to think of what I want to make for lunch and dinner that week.  I sort through the sale flyers for my favorite stores just to see what is on sale and what I can couple with my coupons.  I always ask Anthony if there is anything special he'd like to have, but he is usually content with pretty much anything I cook.  Not only do I have to plan dinners for Anthony and I throughout the week, but I also plan lunches.  Anthony comes home for lunch each day to get a break from work for an hour, and Jace and I enjoy the company.  We eat different meals from week to week, but I recycle our favorites every other week.

Since we are trying to eat better I always include fresh veggies as sides.  We have also stopped eating bread with our meals.  Anytime we have rice or pasta I make sure it is whole wheat, just to include a healthier choice.  As I mentioned in my weight loss post, we don't deprive ourselves, we are just trying to eat healthier foods in place of any "junk" we used to eat.  So far it is working out great!

I plan my weeks starting on Sunday and and end up on Saturday of the coming weekend.  I plan a lunch and dinner for each day, making exceptions on three days: Wednesday and Saturday nights I don't cook because we eat at Anthony's mom's on Wednesday before church and we usually grill out at my parent's on Saturday night.  Sunday's lunch always varies since we eat at church.  One week I might have to make the main dish, the next I may just have to make a dessert, etc.  I always draw out a "rough draft" menu to help in writing the grocery list.

Once I have the meals planned out, I study each day's meals and start making my grocery list.  I look at each meal individually and write down everything I will need to make that particular meal.  While doing this I shop my pantry to make sure I don't buy extra of anything.  Once I've done this for each meal I go through my coupons, picking out the ones I know I'm going to use and setting them aside.  By going to the store with my list and coupons prepared, not to mention my grocery allowance from the budget, the risk of overspending is very unlikely.

Here are what our meals usually consist of.  For lunch we usually have something simple like a grilled tuna wrap, deli sandwich, or grilled chicken salad.  If we are having something like pork chops the night before, we may have leftovers and make pork chop sandwiches.  We usually eat raw veggies or fruit as a side, and that pretty much does it for lunch during the week.  As far as dinner goes we always have one meat and then two or three veggies as sides.  A few of our favorite dinners are fried chicken (may not be the healthiest, but we are in the south people), turkey burgers, and BBQ pork chops.

Once I have my list and everything ready to go, I always write down the weekly meals on our menu board  so I can remember what we are having that week and so Anthony can see without always having to ask me.  I used to just write the menu down on the dry erase board on our fridge, but I have since made an affordable menu board to stick to the fridge so I can have the dry erase board for other notes!  I'll have a tutorial up soon on how to make your own!

This routine of weekly meal menu planning has helped out so much with keeping us within the budget.  Since I've been planning meals this way we have only eaten out twice: once for our anniversary and once on a Saturday because we weren't at home!  Hopefully some of you found this information helpful.

Are you a meal planner?  What are some of your family's favorite meals?

DIY: Canvas Wall Art

We moved into our new house in April when I was eight months pregnant with Jace.  Between all of the remodeling and trying to get the nursery finished, I didn't have much time for decorating around the house.  Five months later I finally have some (hardly any) free time to decorate, so each room gets a little decor at a time.

I have been concentrating on the main rooms of the house since that is what visitors see.  No one ever goes in our bedroom, so up until recently it had absolutely nothing on the walls.  This drove me insane because it didn't feel "homey" enough and truthfully I never wanted to spend any time in there. I decided it was time to add something to the empty walls.

When we first moved in I made some super cute canvas wall art for our guest bathroom.  It looks nice, but most importantly was easy on my wallet!

I figured I could easily do the same above our bed, just with different sized canvas.

It took me about fifteen minutes from the time I started until the wall art was hung.  Did I mention it only cost me $11.00?

What you'll need:

- (3) 12x12 Canvas (Any amount or size will work, this is just what I used)
- (3) Coordinating pieces of 12x12 scrapbook paper
- Coordinating acrylic paint
- Mod Podge
- (2) Foam brushes

Start by painting all four sides of the canvas with the acrylic paint.  For a more opaque finish you might need two coats.  I like being able to see some of the white show through so I only do one coat.

Once you've done all three give them a few minutes to dry completely.

Take one of the pieces of canvas and apply a thick coat of Mod Podge just on the surface.  Make sure you coat the corners and edges really well.  Next take a piece of your scrapbook paper and center it on the canvas.  Press it down, working from the center outwards and smoothing out any bumps that may appear.

Repeat this step with the other two pieces of canvas and voila, you're done!

Now hang them up in your bathroom, bedroom, or wherever you need a little wall decor!

Jace's Bedtime Routine

It has taken us a month and a half, but we have finally settled into a bedtime routine that works for Mr. Jace.  When he was first born I tried putting him on a schedule.  That lasted all of two days and the time it took for me to realize I couldn't let him cry until it was time to feed him next.  A week or so later when he wasn't sleeping during the day I tried it again.  Once more a total fail.

At this point we pretty much do everything on demand, sort of.  When Jace wakes up in the morning he eats around 8:00am and then nurses about every two hours throughout the day.  When it comes to nighttime, no matter what time he's eaten last, I try to get him in the bath around 8:00pm.

I rotate every other night, "bathing" him on one night and just letting him sit in the bath and play the next.  I give him a bath every night regardless just to keep with the routine.  It helps him to wind down and realize it is getting time for bed.

On the nights I bathe him I either use Burts Bees Baby Shampoo & Wash or wash him with Johnson's Bedtime Moisture Wash and use Aveeno Essential Moisture Shampoo.

Baby Bee Shampoo & Wash - Fragrance Free

On nights when he just gets a bath to keep the routine going I use Johnson's Bedtime Bath.

Johnson's Baby Bedtime Bath, Bedtime

Once he's out of the bath I always give him a short massage with Johnson's Bedtime Lotion.

Once he gets a new diaper I'll usually put him in a long sleeve onesie or nightgown.  After bathtime I nurse him to help him get to sleep.  He usually nurses for about twenty minutes and then I rock him back to sleep if he wakes up once I go to put him in bed.

This routine works great for him, especially since he loves bathtime.  He used to wake up once I'd put him in the bassinet, but now he has gotten used to the routine and falls right back asleep as soon as I put him down.

What are some of your favorite nightly routine tricks for your little ones?

Top Mommy Picks Postpartum!

I can't believe our little stinker is already two months old!  It seems like yesterday we were leaving the hospital with no idea of what we'd gotten ourselves into.  Now we (think) have Mr. Jace's routine figured out and life is slowly getting somewhat normal, a new normal.  In my two months postpartum I've discovered a few things that have proven tried and true in making life a little easier.  I think it is safe to say these are my top mommy picks thus far and I'd highly recommend them to any new mommy!

1. Comfy nursing bras:   Comfy nursing bras are a must, especially for new moms or new at nursing mommas.  My favorites are from Motherhood Maternity.  I prefer the sleep/sports nursing bras as long as we aren't going out anywhere.  Nursing bras with an underwire can be a little uncomfortable just for days at home.
Sports Full Coverage Nursing Bra
2. Lanolin cream: This is a LIFESAVER for nursing mommas.  The first few weeks of breastfeeding can be torture for your nipples.  I use the Lansinoh Lanolin Cream and it has worked wonderfully for me.
Lansinoh® HPA® Lanolin 1.41 oz-Lansinoh® HPA® Lanolin, Nipple Cream, Lansinoh breast cream, lansinoh lanolin,

 3. Nipple shields: Speaking of sore nipples!  If your little one is having trouble latching on in the first few weeks and it is causing them and you to stress, as well as making it feel as if your nipples are on fire--get a nipple shield!  I used the Avent nipple protectors and couldn't have been happier.  The shield makes it easier for baby to latch, resulting in less pain for momma.  I would have probably given up on breastfeeding altogether had it not been for these guys!

4. Breastpump: When I first had Jace and nursing wasn't as easy as it is now, having a pump was so handy.  Many women don't like to introduce their newborns to bottles until after at least two months. I thought I was going to be one of these moms.  But after many fussy times and figuring out Jace wasn't getting as much to eat as he should be, I decided to try pumping so I could make sure he was getting enough to eat.  I use the Medela Swing breastpump and LOVE it; it makes pumping such a breeze.  It is just a single pump but works wonderfully for as little as I need it.  Having a pump has also come in handy when I leave Jace with someone.  It makes it easy for grandparents and Anthony to feed Jace without always having to use formula!
Swing
5. Americaine spray: This.stuff.is.awesome!  The nurses at the hospital gave me two bottles to bring home and I went right through those suckers.  Americaine spray is pretty much the same as Dermoplast.  It is designed to help soothe/numb the pain in your lady parts after giving birth.  This isn't the only thing it helps, but obviously this is the symptom it helps relieve regarding postpartum purposes.  I had a 2nd degree tear with Jace, so this spray was amazing in the weeks following his birth while I was trying to heal.  Usually your hospital will provide either Americaine or Dermoplast.  If you are unsure if they do, I highly recommend getting some for when you come home!

Comfy clothes, fuzzy socks/slippers, and a nice, soothing bubble bath are also a few of my favs that have been used quite frequently within the past two months.  What are some of your top postpartum mommy products?

Clean House: Weekly Cleaning!

I love lists and charts (but then again what mom doesn't??)  As a stay at home mom to a two month old, the weekly "chores" around the house can sometimes be forgotten. :)  The easiest way for me to keep track of what needs to be done and what has already been done is by creating a chart (I'm always looking for an excuse to make one.)

I like to split the tasks up throughout the week, doing the least amount of laundry/cleaning on the weekend.  A momma's job is never done, but I like to take less time "working" during the weekend and more time spending it with Anthony and Jace.

You'll notice I divide the rooms up and sort the type of laundry done each day.  I like to list each task that has to be done so that when I finish I can check it off; it helps me feel more accomplished!  This chart/list is by no means all of the cleaning I do, it is simply a basic reference to post on my fridge to help throughout the week.  If I don't have time to finish something one day then I can see it needs to still be done the following day.

Feel free to print your own copy if this particular chart will work for you!  Just click the photo to enlarge it, right click on it, then click "print picture."

What are some of your favorite house cleaning tips??

DIY: Burp Cloths

Raising a baby isn't cheap.  In fact, I think we spend more money on Mr. Jace in a month than I do on myself, but that's okay--he's worth it. ;)  Ever since I found out I was pregnant I was so excited to start making things for the baby.  Blankets, curtains, and burp cloths were just a few of my first projects.  Now that Mr. Jace is here I am finding more and more things I am able to sew myself in order to save a dime here and there.

The burpies I made are super easy to sew and you can make a ton with just a yard of two different fabrics.  The best part is that you can pick and choose your own materials to match the babies nursery theme/decor!

Let's begin!

What You'll Need:
- 18" x 8" piece of cotton fabric
- 18" x 8" piece of matching minky, chenille, or fleece fabric (terry cloth or pre-fold cloth diapers work as well)
- Matching thread (I matched mine to the minky fabric)

1. Start by washing and drying all of your fabric to preshrink it.  Then cut equal 18" x 8" pieces, adding 1/2" for the seam allowance.

2. Place the pieces with right sides facing one another and pin in place around the edges.

3. Begin sewing a 1/2" seam making sure to leave a 1 1/2" - 2" opening on one side in order to flip the material right side out.  Remember to backstitch about 1/2" when starting and stopping around this opening.

4. Remove the pins, clip your corners, and turn the burp cloth right side out.

5. At this point I like to iron the fabric so it lays better while creating a top stitch.  **Do not iron the minky material, only the cotton!  The heat will ruin the fabric.  Once ironed, pin around the edges and sew a 1/4" top stitch on all sides (this will close the turning hole.)

And voila, you have a handmade burpie for your little one!

Weight Loss: 2 Months PP with Jace

This is me on Anthony and my honeymoon a month before I became pregnant with Jace.  I weighed 138 pounds.
You'll have to excuse the lovely face I'm making.  We were deep sea fishing and that face could mean any number of things! :)

This is me ten months later, forty weeks and one day pregnant, 176 pounds, and heading out the door to the hospital to welcome Mr. Jace into this world.

From point A (our wedding day) to point B (Jace's birth) I gained a total of almost forty pounds.  Many of you have been wondering how I seemed to lose the "baby weight" so quickly after his birth.  I'll quickly fill you in on how I gained it, then catch you up to where I stand today!

When Anthony and I got married (a year ago today--how ironic) I lost ten pounds right before the wedding due to stress.  All through college and even after I graduated my weight was always somewhere between 140 and 155.  Lets just say I put on the "freshman fifteen" without any desire to lose it. Oh, and let me also mention I'm only 5'6".

In September, the month after we got married, we found out we were pregnant!  Our joy was short lived when we learned we had lost the baby at five weeks gestation.  My emotions (and weight) were all over the place.  Dealing with trying to learn how to be a wife since I was newly married, finding out just a few short weeks later we were going to be parents, and then realizing not long after that we were no longer expecting and had lost our little blessing.  I can't tell you how much weight I gained up until this point, but it was somewhere around ten pounds.

The very next month after we lost the baby we conceived Jace!  What a blessing and total surprise.  It wasn't until my six week prenatal visit with him that I learned how much weight I'd gained since the wedding and all that had been going on.  I weighed in at 149 pounds on my very first prenatal visit but know that my weight gain at that point had nothing to do with my pregnancy with Jace.  I actually didn't start gaining weight while I was pregnant with him until at least my second trimester!

I gained a total of twenty-five pounds while I was pregnant with Jace.  From time to time towards the end I would gain a few and then lose them again.  I hate to exercise, and even while I was pregnant I didn't exercise much--I just walked a ton!

The day I came home from the hospital after having Jace I weighed somewhere in the mid 160s.  I thought for sure I would automatically lose more weight than that since I hadn't put on much in the first place, but I guess I was wrong.  Gradually over the next few weeks I'd shed a pound at a time.  At this point I didn't have the OK from the doc to exercise, so any weight I lost was from breastfeeding and just watching what I ate (sorta.)

Fast forward to my six week check-up where I am free to start exercising again.  Remember the part where I said I hate to exercise?  Well, that hasn't changed.  The only exercise I have done is run around taking care of Jace and the occasional walk around the neighborhood after supper.  In three days I'll be two months postpartum and I currently weigh 153 pounds; four pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight (but by no means where I'd like to be!)

This isn't the best picture to tell any progress, but its all I've got right now.  This was taken yesterday at 8 weeks postpartum before celebrating our anniversary.

I attribute my weight loss to breastfeeding and a change in my diet.  With a newborn, even if I enjoyed exercising I think it would be hard to find time in the day to do any kind of serious working out, but that's just me.  So, Anthony and I decided we would just change the way we were eating so we at least had that part on track.  I say Anthony and I because it was mainly his idea.  He is such a big support person and has really helped keep me on track with my eating since we started this whole shebang a few weeks ago.

So what exactly does "change the way we eat" mean?  Well we both love soda and I especially love my sweets!  Instead of going crazy all-out and eating only baked chicken and brown rice we just decided I'd stop buying junk snacks and start buying more fresh fruits, veggies, and other healthy snack foods.  We cut out soft drinks (meaning we don't keep them in the house, but will have the occasional soda if we are out to eat, etc.) and try to drink water, juices, or soy milk. We only buy whole wheat pasta, bread, rice etc.  We also limit the amount of sauce/dressing we eat on foods and monitor the portions of food we eat.  It has been so much easier than I thought.  I think because we don't deprive ourselves of sweets or treats, we just limit them tremendously.

Now I am by no means a profesisonal dietician and neither is Anthony, this is just what we decided to do for ourselves and it has been working wonderfully.  Since we started this little change two and a half weeks ago I have lost six pounds!  It is amazing how much better I feel!

I mentioned previously I am by no means weight-wise where I'd like to be but I am trying to have realistic expectations and just take this whole thing day by day.  I can't expect too much without much effort in the exercise department!  My goal is to get back down to the 130s, ideally around 135.  That is a healthy weight for someone of my height, and I'm content with that.  I'm not trying to become some supermodel after all!

I'd like to do weekly updates between my blog and my YT vlog channel so check back if you're interested in my weight loss journey!  Thanks for stoppin' by!
